150th Anniversary Staff Dinner
To mark the University's sesquincentenary, University staff were recently
invited to a special celebratory dinner, held at Wilson Hall. Over 600
members of the University community attended this event.
As part of the celebrations, Vice Chancellor Professor Alan Gilbert

Mildura Branch Reunion
Between 1947 and 1949, the University maintained a branch at the air-force
training camp at Mildura where first year Architecture, Engineering,
Dental Science, Medicine and Science were taught. For some 1,400 students
and staff who were part of the "Mildura experiment", it was
a formative experience. The official opening of the branch occurred
on 17 May 1947.
On the 17th of May 2003, over 260 Mildura alumni congregated at Ormond
College to celebrate the branch's 55th anniversary along with the Chancellor,
Ms Fay Marles, AM and guest speaker Professor Emeritus Nancy Millis.

On the 21st of May over 200 alumni and friends
of the University joined the
Vice-Chancellor, Professor Alan Gilbert, and Mrs Ingrid Gilbert for
a reception and recital at Great Hall in Parliament House to celebrate
the 150th Anniversary of the founding of the University.
Lerida Delbridge (violin), Grace Kim (piano)
and Michelle Wood (cello) performed Joseph Haydn's Piano Trio in G Major(Hob.XV:25),
"Gypsy Trio" and Anton Dvorak's Piano Trio in E Minor, Op.
90 "Dumky"

Receptions with the Chancellor at regional art
galleries during the tour of the Ewing Collection
Chancellor Ms Fay Marles AM hosted a series of alumni receptions in
Gippsland (May 1), Hamilton (February 18) and Mornington (January 29)
to coincide with the exhibition "The Full Majesty of Nature: The
Collection of Dr Samuel Arthur Ewing".
Melbourne medical graduate Dr Samuel Ewing donated his collection of
Australian paintings, prints and drawings to the University in 1938.
The collection covers works from the late nineteenth to early twentieth
centuries by artists including Nicolas Chevalier, Arthur Streeton, Frederick
McCubbin and Hans Heysen. The collection was on display for the first
time in its entirety at the Potter Gallery in late 2002, and is now
touring regional Victoria. Its final destination is the Gippsland Art
Gallery in Sale, where it will be on display from April 18 until June
8.

Chancellor's Regional Tour
As part of her commitment to reconnect personally with
as many alumni as possible during her term in office, the Chancellor
visited two centres with sizable Melbourne alumni communities: Geelong
and Shepparton.

Chancellor's visit to USA & UK
The Chancellor, Ms Fay S. Marles AM and Mr Marles OAM
met Melbourne alumni in San Francisco at the residence of the Australian
Consul-General; in Washington at a small reception; in New York at a
reception co-hosted by the American Australian Association; and in London
and Oxford.
The Chancellor briefed guests about key University developments,
and plans for the Anniversary celebrations in 2003. There was particular
interest in Bio 21, indigenous education issues, and the University's
forthcoming appeal for the Percy Grainger Museum. The Chancellor's speech

Convocation Dinner
Hilary McPhee AO was the guest speaker at this year's
joint dinner for alumni and members of convocation. The speech gave
an overview of the plans for the Anniversary.
Ms McPhee is a Melbourne Arts graduate, former publisher,
Vice-Chancellor's Fellow at the University of Melbourne, and member
of the 150th Anniversary Working Party.

Music Tour 2002
The Chancellor, Ms Fay Marles AM, hosted a series of alumni
receptions in Melbourne, Hong Kong, Bangkok, Singapore, Ipoh (Malaysia)
and Sydney.
The receptions were held in conjunction with performances
by the Young Piano Trio -award-winning performance students Michelle
Wood (cello), Marianne Broadfoot, (violin) and Richard Jackson (piano)
from the Faculty of Music.
The concerts were part of the University's gift to the
alumni community in celebration of the 150th Anniversary. Over 1,000
guests in total attended the various functions. At each event, the Chancellor
briefed guests about key University developments, and plans for the
Anniversary celebrations in 2003. The Chancellor's speech and images
