W.MacMahon Ball Symposium
As foundation Professor of Political Science at the University of Melbourne,
William MacMahon 'Mac' Ball played a leading role in Australian social,
political, and diplomatic life for more than twenty years. This symposium
examines his life and continuing influence.
The symposium will be held in the Sydney Myer Asia Centre, commencing
at 9am, concluding at 5pm. To obtain a registration form and for futher

Electrifying the Past, Engineering the Future
The Department of Electrical and Electronic Engineering is proud to announce
the opening of the “Electrifying the Past, Engineering the Future”
exhibition as part of The University of Melbourne 150th year celebration.
The exhibit features working examples from 1912 to modern day technology
as well as demonstrating the history and development of the department.
Visitors will be invited to experience a hands on technology display
which includes a working Morse code unit and a demonstration of Photonics
for transmitting light pulses via optical fibres. The historic information
explains how the department was founded and who has played a fundamental
role in the development of one of Australia’s most highly respected
electrical and electronic engineering departments.
The official exhibit opening will be held on the 22 September 2003 and
afterwards will be open to the general public. “Electrifying the
Past, Engineering the Future” will be located on the ground floor
of the Department of Electrical and Electronic Engineering on the Parkville
campus and will be open during the week from 11am 2pm. For more information

National Herbarium: Conference
2003 is the 150th anniversary of the National Herbarium. This international
conference will bring together botanists and associated scientific experts.
The conference will be held at the Economics and Commerce Building from
9am to 5pm.
