Flesch and Peter McPhee
An enterprise such as this has obviously involved an element of choice
for inclusion.
The best we can hope is that, while many eminently noteworthy people
have been omitted, all those included are, for different reasons, memorable.
Current staff and students of the University have not been considered.
A second group without whom the University as we know it would simply
not exist has also been excluded. These are donors, whose support has
been widely acknowledged and is felt daily.
The nature of the association which the individuals selected had with
the University varies. In many cases their careers and accomplishments
lay outside the University. Some general intentions have guided our
choice. We wish to highlight the accomplishment of women of the University,
and it is only in recent years that we find significant numbers of them
as professors.
We wished also to cover all aspects of University life, but equal representation
from every faculty or division was not our aim. The very history of
the University precludes this, since faculties were not all established
at the same time and are not uniform in size.
Some of the people included spent most of their lives in the University
of Melbourne, others a few years only. One did not live even to finish
his studies here. All enlivened ‘the Melbourne experience’ for their
fellows and affected the lives of many.
